From promotion to Europe to relegation to promotion to relegation in six seasons…
Six seasons. Five different managers. 41 players signed. £36.6 million spent. 248 league matches played across two divisions. 101 wins. 73 draws. 74 defeats. This was Nottingham Forest between the years 1993 and 1999. During the period, Forest would be twice promoted to and twice relegated from the Premier League. They would twice grace the top half of the top flight and twice finish rock bottom. They would qualify for Europe. They would face the strange experience of having their main goal scorer go AWOL and refuse to play for two months during a season. They would win 7-1 in one season, only to lose 8-1 in another. Nottingham Forest was a team that you just couldn’t take your eyes off, if you were paying attention to them in the first place.
From the highest of highs to the lowest of lows, I will be tracking the fate of Nottingham Forest between 1993 and 1999. Season-by season, I will track the journey of this East Midlands club in six chronological chapters. I will look at every transfer in and out of the City Ground, every winning or losing streak, every match, every goal and who was responsible for scoring or conceding it. In the second edition of the ‘Rise and Fall’ series, following on from the 11-part ‘Rise and Fall of Leeds United 1996-2007’, this series will track and uncover ‘The Rise and Fall of Nottingham Forest’ from the departure of Brian Clough in 1993 to their most recent Premier League season in 1999.
